The benefit of colostrum.
The benefits begin immediately when you breastfeed. Within the first moments of your baby’s life he or she will have some of the best nutrition known to humanity - colostrum. Colostrum is the thick yellow stuff (looks like honey) that the breasts naturally produce for the first few days of your baby’s life. Colostrum has been termed “liquid gold” by doctors and lactation consultants alike because of it’s nutrient and antibody rich makeup.

Colostrum only comes out in very small amounts because the baby’s stomach is very small in the first 24 hours of life. The amount doesn’t matter because the quality and quantity of nutrients and antibodies found in colostrum is more than your little one will ever need. This initial secretion gives your newborn the added protection from bacteria, germs and viruses found in our dirty world.
The breast is smarter than science.
Although you can’t use an Avent Breast Pump to gather colostrum, you can use one once your breast milk comes in. As your baby grows, your body will automatically read your baby’s needs both nutritionally and in quantity. Between the third and fifth day your breast milk will have the perfect combination of fat, protein, water and sugar that the baby needs. It will also regulate the amount and types of antibodies your baby will need to stay protected from germs and illness.

As your baby changes and grows, the breast milk will change too. Although you’ll never notice a physical change, your body knows exactly what your baby needs and will supply it to him or her unrenowned to you.
